Cooperative Food Sales is a buying and trading company that works with nonprofits, food banks, food distributors, and food processors to supply a wide range of quality protein needs, as well as frozen fruit and vegetables, to our customers. We have numerous long-term relationships with processors and source a wide spectrum of protein demands from closeout deals across the country.

CFS is not a broker, but we do finance products and support additional sales people. We manage relationships and sales between customers and other associates.

North Star Imports
Cooperative Food Sales is a distributor for North Star Imports, which primarily produces ground beef in three separate plants. They produce 1 lb. ground beef chubs ideal for food banks, along with 5 and 10 lb. chubs for food service distributors and processors. We can ship products fresh or frozen. North Star can produce any fat-to-lean ratio required and formulate ground beef to your particular application. They also produce IQF hamburgers in their Florida plant, processed for your specifications. Other items include portion steaks and other prepared beef, pork, and specialized chicken items.
Northern Fisheries
CFS is also a distributor for Northern Fisheries. Northern Fisheries specializes in the highest quality fish the world has to offer. They carry over 400 different seafood items and pack their fish under numerous retail and foodservice brands. They stock tilapia, pollack, salmon, shrimp and scallops in retail packages. They also produce portion sizes for food service, especially cod from Greenland and Iceland, in addition to many additional items.

John Gorra
John is the owner of CFS. John grew up in his family's produce distribution company in southeastern Connecticut and worked there for a number of years after college until the business was sold. After moving to Boston to attend graduate school, he worked for nine years in the nonprofit sector, primarily with a large food cooperative. John started Cooperative Food Sales in 1999 in Northampton, Massachusetts.
John and his wife, Rebecca, live in the Shenandoah Valley, just outside the historic town of Staunton, Virginia. They have two beloved daughters currently studying for careers in healthcare.
